US presidential elections reflect two key points about the state of the nation; they bring to light what we primarily reject with our current administration and what we want to see change moving forward. Particularly with the current Trump administration, the 2020 election was a rejection of the rhetoric and policies implemented over the past four years. Across party lines between moderate Republicans and more left-leaning progressives, people campaigned together to elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to restore the decorum of America.
What Biden has already announced for his first 100 days and what that means for international students
After a collective sigh of relief, the US and many around the world are looking to see what the Biden administration will strike down as they enter the oval office. Biden has already released what he strives to achieve in the first 100 days. International students will be happy to see that high on his list are forming a COVID-19 task force, taking down Trump’s controversial immigration policies, making more paths for citizenship and reforming our visa system.
Establishing a COVID-19 task force
Kết quả xổ sốSince COVID-19 has drastically changed how we travel and conduct in-person courses, the president-elect’s plans for a can help address how student life in the US will improve under his administration. He’s recently announced his expert team in epidemiology, which would include a former surgeon general, a former Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner and professor of medicine and epidemiology from Yale. Increasing testing and strategizing the rollout of a potential vaccine once it's ready for the public are both highlights of his strategy to combat COVID-19.
Kết quả xổ sốSpeaking of vaccines, as of November 16 there are two promising vaccines in development. While we know Pfizer’s has been 90% effective, Moderna just announced their vaccine is 94.5% effective against the virus. The vaccines are estimated to be ready before the end of the year for the most vulnerable populations in the US. US Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar speaks of the optimism the brings to Americans and those wishing to come to the US on the national morning television show, Good Morning America.
“Here we are, 10 months from the date when this virus hit out shores,” Azar reflected, “and we’ve got a second 90% plus effective vaccine for the American people. This is really a historic day.”
Kết quả xổ sốThe pandemic and Trump’s mishandling of the impacts of COVID-19 on our nation, international reputation, public health and economy were major factors that pushed voters to elect Joe Biden. How a president handles a crisis makes a large impression on whether the incumbent is assured to be reelected or out the door. The American people have spoken to turn the proverbial car around and
Kết quả xổ sốselect a candidate who will tackle the virus so we can safely return to adapted pre-pandemic normalcy. International students can rest assured that the next inaugurated president will take the pandemic seriously. The study abroad adventure they signed up for will not be such a distant memory. Our campuses have already taken steps for students to be safe on campus, and the next administration will support COVID-19 safety on the federal level. Biden’s goal is that the US will be united in fighting the spread of the virus.
On July 7, 2020, Biden tweeted, “Across the world, people come to this country with unrelenting optimism and determination toward the future. They study here, innovate here, they make America who we are.” International students can look forward to a president whose policies do not actively work against them, but instead embrace them as a voice in our nation.
Rescind travel bans
Kết quả xổ sốAmerica has long been a nation of immigrants, an identity that was thrashed under the Trump administration. Biden has acknowledged that history and seeks to modernize it. Not even in the first 100 days, but on his first day Biden has stated he will make sweeping changes to immigration legislation. He has publicly committed to eliminate Trump’s ban on immigration from primarily Muslim-majority countries. Since the travel bans were executive orders, it’s easily within Biden’s power to quickly overturn these orders immediately.
Reinstate and extend DACA
Additionally, Biden has vowed to reinstate DACA (deferred action for childhood arrivals), make it permanent and introduce a path to citizenship. Similarly, he aims to create new immigration legislation that would extend a process for citizenship to 11 million people who have been living in the US without proper documentation or citizenship.
Reform the visa system
Kết quả xổ sốWithin immigration reform, Biden’s also released plans for reforming the visa system and the visa program for temporary workers in select industries. His would “expand the number of high-skilled visas and eliminate the limits on employment-based visas by country.”
International doctoral students can look forward to long-term stay in the US based on that “foreign graduates of a US doctoral program should be given a green card with their degree and that losing these highly trained workers to foreign economies is a disservice to our own economic competitiveness.”
Kết quả xổ sốInauguration day may not come until January 20, 2021, but the election results demonstrate the direction of the nation for the following four years and a renewed clarity of character. Trump lost the popular vote in 2016, and he lost it again in 2020, which speaks volumes for how the majority of citizens view his agenda. Now, in 2020, we have the electoral college votes to support a candidate who will fight for equality, believes in the incredible strengths of immigrants, and the contributions of those who choose to study here for a brighter future.

While COVID-19 and recent misguided federal policy changes are significant factors in the recent decline of international student enrollment, increased competition from other countries predates both factors and is a primary force that demands a renewed focus on internationalization from U.S. research universities, according to a new report from NAFSA: Association of International Educators, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities; and INTO University Partnerships.
Analyzing data from nearly a dozen publicly available sources, the three groups today released, Kết quả xổ số, which details the factors influencing international student enrollment levels over a period of two decades and provides a roadmap for how U.S. universities can reverse recent declines.
Kết quả xổ sốAmong other factors, the report found that those institutions with a significant international student population already in place were able to attract additional international students. Other prominent factors include national and international recognition for institutions and whether schools have a third-party recruitment (pathway) partnership to facilitate what is often a difficult transition for international students. The report presents lessons from the past and a glimpse of future implications for international enrollment management at U.S. institutions.

Bold partnership launched to enhance Washington State University's global reach
Kết quả xổ sốPullman, WASHINGTON -- INTO University Partnerships has partnered with Washington State University to increase its international diversity and global reach. The effort is an essential step in the Drive to 25, the university’s institutional commitment to achieving recognition as one of the nation’s top 25 public research universities by 2030.
During a ceremony held on its flagship Pullman campus on Monday, Dec. 19, INTO celebrated the beginning of a long-term agreement with WSU.
“Enhancing international diversity on campus is critically important,” said WSU President Kirk Schulz. “This new venture will increase the exposure of students throughout the WSU statewide system to international perspectives, thereby better preparing them to work in environments around the globe and collaborate with colleagues from different cultures.”
Collaboration to prepare international students for success
The collaboration will create a separate entity called INTO Washington State University, which will be managed by a board of directors that includes leaders from both organizations. Working together, WSU and INTO will develop academic pathway programs for international students to improve their English language comprehension while preparing them to be successful, degree-seeking students at WSU.
“Washington State University has long been reputed for its outstanding global engagement and innovation,” said John Sykes, co-founder and chief executive officer of INTO. “This partnership is a natural outgrowth of the university’s commitment to advance and apply knowledge that improves quality of life and economies locally, nationally and globally. We couldn’t be more proud to partner with the university at this exciting time in WSU’s history.”
Kết quả xổ sốWSU is the ninth university in the United States to team with INTO. To date, INTO has helped U.S. universities recruit more than 15,000 students from around the world. In 2015-16, nearly 90 percent of all students enrolled successfully progressed to their full degree program at their host university.
“When we began this process, INTO’s commitment to student success really got our attention,” said Asif Chaudhry, vice president for international programs at WSU and former U.S. Ambassador to Moldova. “It was imperative for us that we collaborate with INTO, an organization with a tremendous reputation for supporting students from recruitment through graduation.
"The most important consideration in the internationalization initiative is the cultural gains that additional international students will bring to the university," Chaudhry said.
Chaudhry noted the initiative also will boost WSU’s efforts to expand its global engagement and outreach activities—providing new opportunities for the university to share its expertise in research, teaching, service, and economic development with global partners. International Programs currently manages an international research and development portfolio in several Asian and African countries valued at $21.5 million.
“More than 30,000 students already know what an outstanding institution WSU is,” said Amy McGowan, chief operating officer for INTO’s North America region. “We are excited to introduce students from around the world to the Cougar family.”
CORVALLIS, OREGON (June 28, 2016) – The Corvallis Public Schools Foundation announced today a partnership with INTO Oregon State University to help area children succeed in school. International students at OSU will serve as mentors and launch student-led fundraising efforts tied to key CPSF programs.
An initial grant from INTO OSU will support the foundation’s summer programs at Corvallis High School. Across the district, more than 350 students take part in these programs each summer. INTO OSU will support interventions designed to help English language learners and students who aspire to be first-generation college students. The summer programs have served as a catalyst in improving high school graduation rates in the Corvallis School District by more than 18 percent since 2012.
“Local individuals, businesses and organizations have played a critical role in boosting graduation rates through these programs,” explained Liv Gifford, CPSF executive director. “This has been a community-wide effort, and we are pleased to have INTO OSU join us in this work.”
Kết quả xổ sốINTO OSU, a unique university-private partnership that helps recruit and support international students for Oregon State University, began a search for a local partner earlier this year to bolster the company’s international charity, INTO Giving. Founded in 2008, INTO Giving raises funds for projects that help educate disadvantaged children in developing nations. Eight years later, the charity is expanding its reach to help students in local communities like Corvallis.
Kết quả xổ số“We want to partner with a local organization to help grow educational access in Corvallis,” said Bob Gilmour, INTO OSU executive director. “The Corvallis Public Schools Foundation helps young people living in difficult circumstances have access to an excellent education—it’s a great fit for INTO Giving and INTO OSU.”
The Corvallis Public Schools Foundation works to reduce barriers to education for traditionally disadvantaged students, expand excellence through enrichment opportunities and provide pathways to graduation. The organization also offers educator grants and recognition and college scholarship opportunities.
Kết quả xổ sốINTO OSU already has begun working with Corvallis High School administrators to create opportunities for international students to volunteer. Gifford said these college volunteers will be important contributors as the Corvallis School District serves a student population that is increasingly diverse, with students from 70 countries speaking nearly 50 languages. In particular, Arabic and Chinese language skills are in high demand, she said.
Kết quả xổ số“INTO OSU’s international student volunteers will be an asset in our schools because of their ability to connect with young students who are English language learners,” said Gifford. “As college students, these young people have left their home countries and are now working toward their college degrees. Their hard work and dedication will set an outstanding example for our summer program participants.”
